Examining the modern lens surrounding medias portrayal of

black men, Tenebrous Flores provides a comparative look between

the impression and the reality of everyday black men. Tenebrous

Flores, meaning “flower of the dark”, captures societies conditioned

perceptions of black men, juxtaposing these images alongside

photographs showcasing the essence of their personalities. This body

of work has been the accumulation of observed portrayals of black

males in the media- instances of the criminalization of black victims

and utilizing mug shots as memorial pictures has encouraged

stereotyping and biases of black males, further encouraging this

representation. In creating this series, I aim to humanize these men,

creating vibrant photographs that provide a chromatic personification

of each’s man’s personalities
